Maya and Victor argued in a grocery-store parking lot after Maya accused Victor of damaging her car. Maya shoved Victor and punched him once in the shoulder. Victor then opened a folding knife, stepped toward Maya, and said, "I am going to cut you." Maya backed away several steps, raised both hands, and said, "I am done. Leave me alone." Victor continued advancing with the knife raised.
Maya had a lawfully carried pistol in her purse. A driveway behind Maya was open, but it was dark, traffic was moving through the driveway, and Maya would have had to turn her back on Victor to reach it. Maya drew the pistol and fired once, killing Victor.
Seconds later, Victor's brother Leo grabbed a tire iron from Victor's truck and ran toward Maya's friend Dana, who had been filming the argument and was standing several feet away. Maya shouted at Leo to stop. Leo kept running with the tire iron raised. Maya fired again, wounding Leo in the leg before he reached Dana.
