A county prohibited open campfires during a dry-wind warning. Dana nevertheless left a campfire smoldering on the west side of a public trail. On the same afternoon, Eli left a separate campfire smoldering two miles east of the trail. Strong winds carried sparks from both fires into the same ravine. Fire experts agree that either fire alone probably would have reached and destroyed Pat's remote rental cabin, but the two fires merged before reaching it.
The merged fire destroyed the cabin and Pat's landscaping equipment stored inside. Pat had also advertised the cabin for summer rentals but had not yet signed any summer rental contracts.
