Harper owned a small cattle farm next to Vale's vegetable fields. A windstorm knocked down a fence during the night, and six cattle wandered into Vale's field, trampling lettuce and eating young plants. Harper had inspected the fence the day before and had no reason to know the storm would damage it.
When Vale entered the field the next morning to drive the cattle out, one steer bumped into Vale and knocked Vale down, injuring Vale's shoulder. The steer had never before acted aggressively, and cattle of that kind were not unusually dangerous.
